Welcome to carysmacom ! This website is being launched at a time of transition, in the midst
of a move from Savoie to Burgundy, in a world wracked by far-reaching global change, both
political and technological, and grappling with shifts in personal and national identities.
As a Welsh-French binational, born in Wales with spells in Scotland, Argentina, Belgium,
Germany and now France, swerving, sidestepping and changing course have been essential
skillsets. However, my passion for translation, interpretation and communication have been a
constant. An enthusiasm recognised by loyal customers for over 25 years.
So why does kicking off my first website for my services after all this time make me draw
comparisons with the Welsh rugby union team?
After years of successful tries and conversions, the world of translation, like the game of The
Dragons, has been blindsided by a powerful new opponent. Translators and copywriters are
gradually being penalised by AI, just as a generation change has seen the (momentary)
collapse of the Welsh 15.
But rugby in general, and the Welsh team in particular, also serves as an inspiration. Rather
than cry “foul play”, resilience has been chosen as the way forward. Rather than hold up the
red card to technological advances, this website is my way of entering the scrum.
The whistle has not yet been blown on communication and exchange. Despite their defeats,
the Welsh rugby team has retained its dignity and determination. Despite the onslaught of
machine translation, I firmly believe that the human factor, the ability to harness technology
and change strategy, will make it possible to boost the performance of even long-established
language service providers.
Rather than concede the match, this website is my way of raising my voice, expressing my
identity, in short, my haka, in response to the challenges ahead. Just as the national anthems
are sung with passion to galvanize our teams. This is not a swansong. It is a bugle call.
High-quality translation and communication are something I am ready to fight for.
A rugby team is a microcosm of the world. It needs a diverse selection of players, just as the
world needs its rich array of languages. In both cases, variety is their strength and beauty.
Both also need a captain to inject a bit of method into the madness.
At the helm of carysmacom, I hope that this website will inspire you to convert the try by
making your product or service a player on the international stage.
